Judy Dempsey at The New York Times: E.U. Elites Keep Power From the People

Judy Dempsey, The New York Times’ Senior Correspondent for Europe in Berlin, unpacks the European project and the current crises from a foreign perspective. She clearly highlights the gap between a bureaucratic, insufficient democratic and elitist European Union and those who should internalize the European spirit and fill it with life: it’s citizens. To “bring Europe to its citizens” the Union must open “its doors fully to accountability and democracy” and needs leaders who explain not only the recent crises to the public but foremost the shape, purpose and function of the European Union, Dempsey writes.
